5 Winter Car Storage Tips – Part 2

Last time we talked about two important winter car self storage tips. Here are the last three self storage tips for your car during the winter.

3) Get a good car cover:
Whether your car is stored indoors or outdoors, having a good car cover can prevent any damage from dust, wind, the sun, etc. Sure, this may sound like a simple, common sense buy and use tip, but make sure your cover is tightly fastened to your car. A cover that isn’t secure can cause scratches to your car. If the wind is making the cover flap around, this will surely cause damage.

4) Disconnect your battery:
Did you know electronics draw electricity from their source when they are not being used? If you leave a fresh battery in a car over the summer, you can be sure that your battery will be drained. This simple preventative measure can save you the headache of not being able to start up your car, and having to get a new battery when the season is over.

5) Get your tires off the ground:
If allowed by your facility, consider either putting the car on jack stands or concrete blocks to get your tires off of the ground. This prevents the possibility of having flat spots that will cause you to have a rough ride when you get your car back on the road.

Hopefully that’s enough help for you to storage your car during the cold winter months. Check back soon for another helpful article from our self storage experts.

5 Winter Car Storage Tips – Part 1

It’s that time of year again. The winter is almost here and you don’t want to see your car sitting in your driveway as the heavy snow comes down. If you plan on getting storage for your car, make sure you follow these important tips. It is possible to do more damage if you don’t store your car properly, so here are a couple ways to prevent anything from happening to your car:

1) Give your car a good cleaning:
Anything that can attract unwanted visitors (i.e. bugs), should be cleaned up. Any old spills, scraps, food, should be removed. This may require a detail, but will be well worth it in the end. As it gets colder, bugs and animals are looking for something to eat, and somewhere to be warm. Cars can be a prime location. Any measures needed to prevent them from damaging your car should be considered.

2) Service your car:
It’s a good idea to have your car serviced before you put it into storage. Changing your oil, changing the anti-freeze, flushing the radiator, taking out the mats, and filling your gas tank are all very common and practiced tips for anyone looking to store their car for the winter.

Check back in a few days for the next three tips.

Taking Your Motorcycle Out Of Storage For The Summer

In the past we’ve talked about tips for putting your motorcycle away in storage for the winter. Now it’s summer finally, and it’s time to take that motorcycle out for a sweet ride. But just like for the winter, there is some preparation you should do to care for your motorcycle before jumping right on it when you pull it out from its storage unit.

Check the fuel inside the tank by looking for gunk inside the filler cap. If you used Sta-Bil or another brand of fuel stabilizer your fuel should be good to use as long as it’s been less than a year. If the fuel isn’t consistent and clean then you should drain out the tank, fuel lines, and carburetor before you the start the engine. Also consider removing the spark plugs and adding two tablespoons of oil into the ports of the spark plugs to lubricate top part of the cylinder walls.

Check the oil level of the engine before riding. If you haven’t done an oil and filter change before you put the motorcycle into storage, it makes sense to do so now. Oil degrades as it sits, so an oil and filter change will help before you start your motorcycle’s engine.

Check the battery, because motorcycle batteries tend to drain quickly in the cold weather. If you left your battery hooked up to a battery tender then it’s probably in good shape. Regardless, it’s smart to check the battery leads for corrosion.

Check the coolant, brake, and clutch levels to make sure there are no leaks. Check the tires for any unusual stress marks, cracks, or flat spots; especially if you left it resting on a kickstand. If you kept the weight off your tires then they should be in good shape along with the suspension. Make sure after you start the bike for the first time, to idle it and allow the fluids to circulate before taking off on it.
